The Barbara McDowell Public Interest Law Center announcement featured in Law 360 Article

On November 1, 2022, the announcement of the Barbara McDowell Public Interest Center was featured in Law360 article “Ex-Latham Atty To Head New Impact Litigation Org.” by Ryan Boysen.

The article included the Center’s plans to “file lawsuits to advance social justice issues and bridge the widening gap between the rich and poor.” The article also highlighted the Center’s leadership by featuring Senior Litigation Director, Robert Sims, retired Latham & Watkins LLP partner, the Center’s President, Gerald Hartman, retired employment attorney and partner at Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP, and the Center’s Vice President, Bill O’Reilly, former Jones Day partner.

The article discussed the work of Barbara McDowell, “a lauded former assistant solicitor general under presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, who then founded the appellate program at Legal Aid Society of Washington,” and included the work of the Barbara McDowell & Gerald S. Hartman Foundation in providing grants to support organizations pursuing social justice litigation.

Gerald Hartman was quoted regarding the Foundation’s inspiration for founding the Law Center, “It became apparent to the Foundation that its work could be even more impactful through a coordinated approach of an affiliated organization, the Law Center, making its own selection of high impact cases for litigation, engaging in issue advocacy, and conducting civil rights education.”
